Floor Prep for Vinyl, Timber & Carpet: Choosing a Self-Leveller

Vinyl, hybrid, carpet and timber installers all know the same rule: any bump or hollow in the subfloor shows up in the finished floor. Choosing the right levelling compound depends on how much you need to fill, what the substrate is, and how quickly the covering needs to go down. Here's how the Tru Level range, manufactured in Australia by RLA Polymers, lines up.

Match the product to the job

Product Thickness range Best for
Tru Level Fine Finish Feather finishing Smooth skim over internal concrete and timber before vinyl, lino or carpet
Tru Level Econo Pro 1mm to 30mm General-purpose self-levelling on interior floors, silica-free (RCS-free)
Tru Level Econo Pro Plus 1mm to 30mm Enhanced flow and strength across a wide range of foot-traffic areas
Tru Level Flexi 1mm to 20mm Fibre-reinforced, for timber subfloors and substrates prone to movement
Tru Level Bulkfill UT 3mm to 100mm Deep fills on concrete before carpet, tile or floating floors
Tru Level Tuff Top 3mm to 30mm Commercial and industrial floors with heavy traffic, indoors or out
Tru Level Rapid Patch 2mm to 40mm Patching, ramping, steps and landings, with fast return to service

Three questions to ask first

What's the substrate? Concrete is the easy case. Timber subfloors move, so a fibre-reinforced product like Flexi is the safer choice.

How deep is the worst spot? Measure it. If you're beyond around 30mm, a high-build product like Bulkfill UT avoids multiple pours. Small localised hollows and ramps are quicker with Rapid Patch.

What's going on top, and when? Thin, resilient coverings like vinyl and lino show every flaw, so finish with a smooth product such as Fine Finish. Always check the leveller's drying time against the moisture requirements of the floor covering.

Don't skip the primer

Levelling compounds rely on a primed substrate to bond properly and to stop the surface drawing water out of the mix too fast. Browse primers for levelling compounds, and use a spiked roller to release air after the pour.

We also stock Mapei, Laticrete and Gripset levellers in our levelling compounds collection.

Thickness limits, drying times and substrate suitability vary by product. Always check the current technical data sheet before use.
